What is a pediatric dentist and how do they differ from "regular dentists"?

Well, in a nutshell, a pediatric dentist is a specialist who is dedicated to the oral health of children from infancy through the teen-age years. During this "growth" phase of a child, special approaches are needed in dealing with their behavior, and guiding their dental growth and development in order to avoid future dental problems. The pediatric dentist is best qualified to meet those needs. Children are our only patients, and all our training is devoted to meeting their specialized needs.

Did you know pediatric dentists have an additional two years of training to acquaint them with the special needs and remedies available to children?

That's right! In addition to learning the most up-to-date treatments available for a wide variety of children's dental problems, we also learn how to deal with the behavioral aspects of children, how to make them feel comfortable about the treatment they are receiving, and to make the experience pleasant, and not fearful! Additionally, we are trained and qualified to treat special patients, mentally or physically challenged children.

There are many areas of prevention and care that are unique to children which the pediatric dentist is specifically trained to identify, treat and prevent. That is why many parents wisely choose a pediatric dentist for their child's dental needs, just as they choose a pediatrician for their medical needs. Following are some important educational areas we've included in this section of our site.

Dentistry in India

Modern Indian dentists must earn the Bachelor of Dental Surgery degree (B.D.S.), which requires four years of study and one year of internship. This degree is overseen by the Dental Council of India. In most states, one has to appear for an entrance test conducted by the Directorate of Medical Education, whereas some autonomous universities conduct their own entrance tests.

  Pediatric Dentistry
  Why Pediatric Dentistry
Pediatric Dentistry is an age-defined specialty that provides both primary and comprehensive preventive and therapeutic oral health care for infants and children through adolescence, including those with special health care needs. (Adopted 1995).
  -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Like pediatricians, pediatric dentists specialize in treating very young children to teens. Because of additional pediatric dental training and limiting our practice to pediatrics, we are able to keep current on the latest diagnostic and treatment procedures for young people.
  -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  Philosophy
The philosophy of a Pediatric Dentist is to care for the well being of the child patient. They are specialists dedicated to the oral health of children, infants and teens as well as patients with special health care needs.
  -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  Specialization
The Pediatric Dentist's specialization allows them to provide the most up-to-date thorough treatment for a wide variety of children's dental problems. They are also trained and qualified to care for patients with medical, physical, or mental disabilities. This is particularly helpful for children who are experiencing anxiety about visiting the dentist.
